RUGBY WORLD CUP
ITALY 48-7 CANADA
ZIPPI ZANI
Steyn snatching up the ball and powering for the line.
This time, there’s no stopping him – and Allan adds the conversion.
A nice flowing
move involving Campagnaro and Minozzi puts Canada on the back foot, and Dean
Budd steps forward with the ball, Tierney completely misses his tackle and the
captain steps through the gap. Allan adds the conversion.
The pressure comes in waves, moving right to left, with
Canada unable to slow things down and regroup. Eventually Sebastian Negri finds
himself up against Nelson, who is physically outmatched and can’t keep the
flanker from going over. Allan adds the conversion, and Italy are surely out of
sight.
Ah, but the wing’s hard work is undone by Matt Heaton, who
went in low with a no-arms tackle in the buildup! It’s a penalty try and a
yellow card for Heaton, who’s had a pretty dreadful day at the office. That
wraps up a bonus point for Italy
A terrific, flowing attacking move from Italy, with Jake
Polledri pivotal before the ball is worked left to Mattia Bellini, who skips
past his man and races away to score!
Andrew Coe! He looks more like Sebastian Coe as he romps
down the right flank, but with Bisegni looming at the line, he produces a
lovely feint to sneak past him, and into the corner. Nelson nails a tricky
conversion,
Another rolling maul, more punishment for the Canadian
forwards, and eventually, inevitably, Italy get over the line. It’s the
replacement prop, Federico Zani, with the score – and Carlo Canna adds the
extras.
Italy add a seventh try, with man of the match Jake Polledri
bursting upfield, combining with Bellini before releasing Minozzi. Nobody in
red is going to catch him.
MY
OPINION
This is a set up to the big games
yet to come and whether or not the momentum can change the Italians for the
better the second lot of games against New Zeeland and more so South Africa
will seal their fates but they can be sure that they will play world cup rugby
in 4 years even if something is to change
ENGLAND 45-7 USA
CARIBBEAN COKANSIGA
From the maul the ball is thrown straight to George Ford,
who spies a gap in the USA defence and speeds straight through it! He touches
down between the posts, and it’s easily converted!
And they get a try! From the line-out England drive the ball
over the line and Vinipola touches down! Ford’s kick sails between the posts,
and England further extend their lead! That was a little too easy, but though
England haven’t been particularly convincing with the ball, they have kept it
in the USA half for almost the entire game and that kind of pressure is going
to tell.
Another try, and it’s a repeat of the second! This time the
line-out is on the right rather than the left, and a bit further from the
tryline, but England just steamroller through their opponents and in the end
Cowan-Dickie touches down! Ford’s attempted conversion, with several USA
players closing down, hits the post and rebounds away!
A lovely run from Joseph, whose spin takes him past a couple
of opponents and who then sprints towards the tryline. He’s finally stopped
just a couple of yards short, and the ball is popped straight to Cokanasiga,
who goes over!
A quick tap-penalty and England have the USA scrambling and
failing to organising their defence. Eventually the ball goes wide to the
right, where McConnochie collects and goes over! This
conversion was harder still, but Ford gets his aiming perfect this time and it
sails between the posts!
The gap is becoming a chasm now, and there’s an enormous
void on the right side of the USA defence as England work the ball wide and end
up with four players marching untracked to the tryline, with Lewis Ludlum doing
the honours!
The ball is quickly worked to Cokanasiga, who with half the
USA defence either busy stopping Genge or lying scattered around the field in
his wake is able to streak through!
It’s all a horrible mess. England give the ball away two
yards off their line, and this chance the USA can’t fluff! Bryce Campbell goes
over the line!
MY
OPINION
This was a proper performance who
England showed what they can do before matches against both France and Argentina
which will define this group. For the USA this is a brand new sport and a lot
of people will have a time understand it will take a few years before they are
ready to compete with the big guns but this might be the most watched match of
the World cup
