25-9-18 LEAGUE CUP
FOOTBALL LEAGUE CUP
THIRD ROUND
BLACKPOOL 2-0 QPR
GNADULLENT GALLANT
Armand Gnanduillet gave the hosts the lead as he sent Ben Heneghan's
headed delivery home.
Queens Park Rangers were reduced to 10 men when Jordan
Cousins picked up a second booking deep in the second half.
Jay Spearing fired from the edge of the box late on
MY OPINION
I expected a lot more of a reaction
from QPR after they lost the lead but a cup run can get the fans going in this competition.
I think that maybe there is a sense that cups can be a distraction for QPR this
season but momentum can change things in a cup run.
BOURNMOUTH 3-2
BLACKBURN
WILSON MAKES
EVERYTHING WELL
Junior Stanislas volleyed the opener and Jordon Ibe made it
2-0 from the spot after Darragh Lenihan's foul.
Craig Conway pulled one back and after Tyrone Mings brought
down Ben Brereton, Adam Armstrong's penalty equalised.
But Rovers' Derrick Williams saw red for deliberate handball
before Wilson headed in a corner right at the death.
MY
OPINION
A mad match that genuinely could
have went either way as the Championship side must be that little bit annoyed
at how they lost the match. I think that this game was an even one Bournemouth
showing quality at the start but Blackburn getting more into it as it went on.
Blackburn could do well in the Premiership.
BURTON 2-1 BURNLEY
AGGRESSIVE ALLEN
Burnley twice had the ball in the net through Wood and Long,
but the offside flag was raised on each occasion.
Wood flicked an effort narrowly wide before the Premier
League team went in front after 40 minutes when Long headed in a Johann Berg
Gudmundsson corner
Evtimov did well to repel a powerful Gudmundsson effort from
the edge of the box before a swift counter-attack from Burton resulted in Boyce
scoring the equaliser, sliding the ball beneath Heaton.
However, it was Burton who struck the decisive blow with
seven minutes left as Boyce slipped a perfectly-weighted pass through to Allen
inside the penalty area and he fired past Heaton
MY
OPINION
This is a huge win for League
one Burton but for Burnley they might not care as it will make things easier
for Premiership survival and they do not have the best record in cup competitions
this season. Burnley now have to look at why this is happening.
MILLWALL 1-3 FULLHAM
DE LA TORRE
DEPRESSES WALL
From midfield, De la
Torre played a classy through-ball to the full-back, who controlled possession.
From a tight angle towards the left of the area, he powerfully finished low and
just inside the far right post.
Christie had already gone close when Floyd Ayite got back in
behind Millwall's defence to cross for De la Torre, who from close range then
took a touch before shooting beyond Amos.
Tom Elliot headed in, with the hosts struggling to defend
Ferguson's corner and after a 12-match run without scoring, but Christie's fine
strike ended any uncertainty.
Amid another attack and space towards the edge of the area,
the full-back took advantage of the time he had been gifted to superbly curl
with his left foot low and into the far left corner, well out of the diving
Amos' reach.
MY
OPINION
This was a very comfortable win
for Fulham but you would not have thought it at certain points in the game as
Milwall were able to do what was needed but after scoring the third there was
little Millwall could do they would want a big team in the next round.
OXFORD 0-3 MAN CITY
JESUS PROVES A CITY GOD
Referee Roger East let play continue after a foul on Mahrez
with Foden taking full advantage, spraying a brilliant diagonal ball to release
Brahim Diaz. The young Spaniard's shot deflected up and into the path of Jesus,
who was on hand to nod the ball into the back of an empty net.
Foden played another brilliant pass to release Mahrez and
the Algeria international raced through on goal to finish off an excellent City
counter-attack.
Then came Foden's moment to remember, the young Englishman
keeping his cool to finish
MY
OPINION
I think that Man City showed I this
match the damage that they can do but maybe they are not up to t6he levels that
they had been in the past. It should have been a lot bigger win for City but Oxford
should take credit and move forward in the right way.
PRESTON 2-2 BORO
Boro win 4-3 on pens
TOP TRAVERIER
A Ben Pearson long
ball was played into a right-hand channel, Alan Browne ran on to it, held the
ball across to Robinson on the edge of six-yard box, with his back to goal and
the No.7 spun and shot left footed into the top left-hand corner.
The lead only last seven minutes though as some smart
one-touch passing from Boro saw skipper Grant Leadbitter play the ball through
to Lewis Wing who laid in Fletcher and he rounded Maxwell and slid into the
empty net.
But it was North End
who went back in front on 66 minutes. The ball was worked well from front to
back finding Barkhuizen, who had been switched from to the left in the second
half, he cut inside to a position 25 yards out level with the left-hand edge of
the box, where he unleashed an arrow-like low drive that came off the inside of
the left-hand post to make it 2-1.
The lead again only lasted three minutes as this time
Tavernier picked up the ball in a left-hand channel 25 yards out and fired a
superb effort into the top right-hand corner, giving North End’s goalkeeper no
chance.
MY
OPINION
This was a good game to watch
and the fact that it ended in a shootout helped the cause as Boro might have
got away with one here but they are a lot better than what this represents as
for what Preston can do this has to excite them.
WOLVES 0-0 LEICESTER
Leicester win 3-1 on
pens
WARD WONDERS
Goalkeeper Danny
Ward saved three penalties as Leicester beat Wolves in a dramatic shootout at
Molineux to reach the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.
Substitute Kelechi Iheanacho scored the winning penalty
after Wolves trio Romain Saiss, Diogo Jota and Adama Traore all missed their
spot-kicks.
MY
OPINION
Not the best match by a long way
but when you learn how to win a match like this sometimes you can learn how to
win a title and I think that this result could shoot Wolves up the table.
WYCOME 3-4 NORWICH
RHODES RUNS RIOT
After bundling home an Emi Buendia cross for the opener,
Rhodes then unleashed a strike from the edge of the box to double the
Championship side's lead within 15 minutes.
Wycombe were not out of the contest yet and - after a header
struck the bar - Paris Cowan-Hall slotted home from close range.
However, Norwich's two-goal advantage was restored before
half-time with Tom Trybull rising high to plant a free header into the corner
of the net.
Rhodes completed the 10th hat-trick of his club career early
in the second half, sticking out a toe to convert a Buendia through ball.
But Wycombe soon got two goals back, the first coming when
Sam Saunders converted from the penalty spot after Alex Samuel was brought
down, just after the hour mark.
Then, after a loose ball fell to Craig Mackail-Smith, whose
shot was parried, the ball back in was bundled home by Adebayo Akinfenwa in
what proved to be a consolation 15 minutes from time.
MY
OPINION
This is definitely the type of
match to sell football to the non-soccer fan that I am sure of but defensively
this was a disaster for both sides but I do get the understanding that wins
like this can boost a team’s confidence and even loosing one might as it shows
you can score goals against better opposition
MAN U 2-2 DERBY
Derby win 8-7 on pens
MANSION MARRIOTT
Mata broke the deadlock after three minutes, finishing off a
smart United move to curl home into the bottom corner.
Benett would have his moment though, striking a stunning
free-kick from range to leave Romero rooted to the spot as it nestled in the
top left corner for a deserved equaliser.
Marriott capitalised after Mount's shot was saved, heading
past Grant, but United were not done, as substitute Marouane Fellaini headed
home a stoppage time equaliser
MY
OPINION
This could be one of the things
that costs Morinho his job as United do not look right at the moment and
whether or not he can fix it fast and even qualify for the Europa I’m unsure as
for Derby a win over a big side in a cup must be considered a huge success.
WBA 0-3 PALICE
TOWNSEND TRAILS REST
Andros Townsend
scored a spectacular goal to help Crystal Palace cruise past Championship West
Brom and progress to the Carabao Cup fourth round.
The winger ran with the ball from inside his own half before
smashing a shot inside the far post from 30 yards for Palace's first goal.
Patrick van Aanholt fired in the visitors' second from the
edge of the box in the 76th minute.
Townsend topped a fine display by scoring Palace's third
late on.
MY
OPINION
This was a surprisingly easy win
for Palace as I thought WBA would put up more of a fight than this it is a we
bit strange did them not care about how much excitement a cup could bring.
