WOMENS WORLD CUP
LAST 16
NETERLANDS 2-1 JAPAN
KUMAGAI KILLS
The corner from the left drops at the feet of Martens, on
the six-yard line. She back-flicks towards the goal. The ball breaks off
Sugasawa, desperately spreading herself to block, and squeaks into the bottom
right. Yamashita had no chance of changing direction.
This is a sensational goal! Sugita sashays in from the left.
She lays off to Sugasawa, on the edge of the box, her back to goal. Sugasawa
immediately cushions a pass for Iwabuchi, who shrugs off Groenen, draws Van der
Gragt, then dinks a cheeky pass forward to Hasegawa, suddenly inside the area
in acres of freshly created space! Hasegawa gently wedges the ball over Van
Veenendaal and into the top right! As calm as you like. A stunning finish, a
stunning team goal.
Beerensteyn dribbles in from the right. She causes much
panic. The ball ends up at the feet of Miedema, who smashes a first-time shot
goalwards. It hits Kumagai’s right arm, which is hung out by her side. That’s a
nailed-on penalty.
There’s a VAR check first, of course. But it’s going to be
given. Adding insult to injury, Kumagai is booked.
Martens sends Yamashita the wrong way, and rolls the ball
into the bottom right. So clinical. So unfortunate for Japan, who have been by
far the better side.
MY
OPINION
The Dutch got lucky in this
match and there is little else to say about that. This was a game that could go
either way until the last minute when they conceded their goal and had not got
the time to respond
ITALY 2-0 CHINA
GREAT GIACINITI
The goal originated in yet another Chinese mistakes: they
are continually coughing up the ball under pressure in their own half. This
time Wu was the culprit wide on the left. Peng made a good save at the feet to
Bartoli but when the ball rebounded towards the penalty spot, Giacinti was
sharpest, beating a defender to it and stabbing home.
Galli received the ball in space about 25 yards out
and perfectly central. She takes one touch to control it and then sweeps a low
shot beyond the keeper and into the net!
MY
OPINION
This was a lot easier a match
than the one the Italians would have expected as China are learning to be a
force in the women’s game. I feel that
it was the early goal that made the difference in a huge way and changed the game
completely
