6-11-17 MLS PLAY OFF
SUNDAY MLS PLAY OFFS
NEW YORK CITY FC 2-0
COLOMBUS CREW AGG 3-4
STRUNA GOAL NOT
ENOUGH
City got just the
start it needed when Rodney Wallace was toppled in the penalty area by Frederic
Brillant and David Villa slotted home the ensuing spot kick to make it 1-0.
The host side clawed back one of the two goals it needed
early in the second half when Crew defender Jonathan Mensah redirected Andraz
Struna's shot into his own net.
MY
OPINION
New York had an impossible task
but I understand it there was a massive difference in class between New York
and Columbus in the first leg and it was that that made the difference. New
York needed to get a good first leg deficit.
TORONTO 0-1 NEW YORK
RED BULLS
Toronto win on away
goals
PERFECT WRIGHT
PHILLIPS
The Red Bulls got off to a dream start in the second half
when Daniel Royer's shot from 40 yards took a deflection off Bradley
Wright-Phillips and trickled into Toronto's goal giving New York an important
away goal and a 1-0 lead.
MY
OPINION
In this 2 legged match this was
the match that would be tight and it turned out to be that way from the start
of the first leg. This was a battle and one that I don’t this either deserved
to win and a match like this should help Toronto going into the semi-final.
PORTLAND TIMBERS 1-2
HOUSTAN DYNAMO
RUNNING REMMICK
The Timbers would strike first at the end of tight opening
half when Dairon Asprilla took advantage of a slip from Remick in his own
penalty area to collect a cross from the left and slam it home in the 39th
minute. Remick would quickly atone for his error, though, hitting a vicious
half-volley to level things two minutes from halftime and put Houston ahead on
the away goals tiebreaker.
However, the Dynamo would deal the knockout blow to Portland
with 13 minutes left in regulation when Manotas fired in a low scorcher from
outside the box that snuck past Timbers 'keeper Jeff Attinella and nestled in
the far corner.
MY
OPINION
Houstan look like they had the
ability to kill off the game at any stage and now visually they are a lot
further along than people would have thought. This will be a learning
experience for the timbers at them had won the MLS not so long ago so a bad
season is as important as a good one.
